PS4 Pro is targeting ‘committed players,’ with 4K and HDR says Sony boss

Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), has said that the format holder is targeting ‘knowledgeable and dedicated’ players with the upcoming PlayStation Pro.

Speaking during an interview DigitalSpy, House said that the type of consumer Sony is looking to attract with PS4 Pro is in the name of the system; it’s not something geared towards the average punter.

I think that the industry probably needs to take more time not just in explaining the benefits, but showing what those benefits are. One of the reasons we elected to pursue PS4 Pro is that 4K and HDR in particular are a natural for games – it’s very easy for most people to be able to see a demonstrable difference between those two technologies. That being said – you phrased the question around the “average user” – we did call it PlayStation 4 Pro … so I think it’s inherent in the name – I’m not being facetious, honestly! We are targeting this towards someone who is probably pretty knowledgeable and committed in the kind of entertainment they want,” he said.

PS4 Pro release date set for November 2016, brings 4K gaming to key titles

Sony unveiled the PS4 Pro, which previously went by the working title of PS4 Neo, during a special event in New York City a few weeks back. The console will go on sale on November 10, 2016, priced at $399/£349, and allows gamers to enjoy high resolution gaming with an increased frame rate.

The console itself packs more horsepower than the standard PS4, with Guerrilla Games stating the PS4 Pro is roughly twice as powerful than the regular model. However, it isn’t quite up to par spec-wise with the upcoming Xbox Scorpio from Microsoft, nor will it offer support for 4K Blu-ray—at least not immediately

Regular PS4 owners won’t be left behind though, as Sony has already made HDR support available via a free update. A number of games have been confirmed to utilise PS4 Pro support, including Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Resident Evil 7: biohazard among others.
