Ubisoft has seemingly given the green light to Michael Ancel’s Beyond Good & Evil 2, according to an Instagram post from the videogame maker.
Ancel posted the image below along with the following text: "Somewhere in system 4 … – Thanks #ubisoft for making this possible!”
Why is this significant? Well, for starters, the small porker in the above image could very well be an infant version of Pey’j, who fans will recognise as the adoptive uncle of Beyond Good & Evil protagonist, Jade. The human character may in fact be Jade’s biological father, who was supposedly killed prior to the events of the original game.
In addition, System 4 is the location of planets in the Beyond Good & Evil universe, all but confirming that a sequel is in the works, although given the nature of the image we’re probably looking at a prequel.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 hitting PS4 and Xbox One due to last-gen limitations
Beyond Good & Evil was originally released on the PlayStation 2 and GameCube back in 2003, and garnered a cult following among gamers. Unfortunately, the positive reviews it received at the time did not translate into sales, with the game failing to set tills alight—no doubt explaining why a sequel has taken so long to come into fruition.
Ubisoft later ported the game to PS3 and Xbox One in high-definition in the shape of Beyond Good & Evil HD.
Back in 2008, Ubisoft confirmed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 was in development, although it later emerged that the project would likely come to next-generation systems, meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Ancel later admitted that the game would have been ‘painful’ on last-generation hardware, with the sequel moving to new systems as a result of ‘scope limitations.’
Last we heard, the title was still very much in development, although at the time it wasn’t known when the game would see the light of day. With this latest development however, hopefully we’ll get to find out some concrete details soon.
