PlayStation 4 is officially the world’s best-selling video games console during the period 2014-2016, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) announced during a recent preview video for the upcoming Glacier White PS4 Slim.
Sony had previously championed its flagship games machine as the ‘world’s best-selling console,’ although did not divulge which period this related to. However, in the latest run of ads, the console maker said the figures are “Based on sales of all consoles from [January 1, 2014] to [December 31, 2016].”

The PS4 was released in November 2013 alongside the Xbox One, although Sony’s console quickly gained the lead in terms of worldwide sales. Sony announced last week that its current-generation system has sold over 53.4 million units worldwide to date, although it is unknown how many units the Xbox One has sold in comparison.
Last year proved a significant period for Sony, with no less than three new hardware launches. First off the assembly line was the PS4 Slim in September 2016, which replaced the original model, while October saw the release of PlayStation VR. Finally, November saw the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro, a high-end version of Sony’s flagship console that allows for 4K gaming and various other enhancements.
2017 looks set to be another bumper year for PlayStation fans, with numerous exclusives lined up for release, including Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD Final Chapter Prologue, Crash Bandicoot Nsane Trilogy, Gran Turismo Sport, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy among others.
