Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 7: biohazard has shipped three million copies worldwide since its launch on January 24, 2017.

The critically acclaimed survival horror game released on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, and sold through 2.5 million copies just over a week after launch. The game managed to top the U.K. All Format Chart upon its release, selling over 70 percent of all copies on Sony’s current-generation console.

Resident Evil 7’s success brings lifetime sales of the venerated horror franchise to 76 million. The series celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016, having first launched on the PlayStation back in March 1996 and catapulting the survival horror genre into mainstream success following its genesis with Alone in the Dark.

In addition, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the latest installment in Sony’s live action film series based on the games, has pushed the movie franchise’s box office gross to over $1 billion dollars worldwide.

Resident Evil 7 takes place four years after the events of its action-packed predecessor, and sees newcomer Ethan Winters travelling to a seemingly abandoned plantation mansion in Dulvey, Louisiana in search of his missing wife. However, he soon finds himself battling for his life against the insane Baker family, while solving an array of fiendish puzzles in order to get to the bottom of the whole affair.

Capcom will support Resi 7 with numerous post-launch content packs, the first of which, Banned Footage Vol.1, is now available for PS4. The second launches on February 14, and there’s a free story-based mission, Not a Hero, scheduled to drop in spring 2017.
