Uncharted movie release date is still unknown—but who will play Nathan Drake?
The director behind the upcoming Uncharted movie has revealed that he conceived the script with an R rating in mind, with the big screen adaptation of Nathan Drake’s fortune-hunting antics playing true to the games—right down to the action sequences and bad language.
“When I wrote ‘Uncharted,’ I didn’t spare the rod. I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they’re kinda foul-mouthed and I kept all that stuff intact and I definitely didn’t write it as a ‘PG-13’ movie, I wrote it the way that movie should be written,” Joe Carnahan told ComingSoon.
Uncharted movie script is now complete
It also seems that Sony gave Carnahan the reins to do anything he wanted with Uncharted. Asked if there were any restrictions put in place, he replied:
“No, they let me kinda do my thing. I probably wrote four of the biggest, f***in’ craziest action sequences I think I’ve ever written in that movie. I used the “Uncharted” games as a template but not using any one specifically, because those sequences have already been done beautifully. There’s no point in just transposing them to film, you’ve gotta come up with new sh*t, so that’s what I did. It was a great challenge but it was a lot of fun.”
The Uncharted movie has endured a turbulent production history, with numerous directors and writers having jumped ship over the years. Originally, the film was to be helmed by David O. Russell, and deviated considerably from the source material; his vision saw Mark Wahlberg playing Nate, who was part of a Soprano-style family of treasure hunters. Needless to say, this didn’t sit well with fans, and O. Russell soon departed.
Neil Burger was next in line to take over the Uncharted film, who promised to take the movie back to its videogame roots. This didn’t work out either, with Burger’s script undergoing a rewrite before Seth Gordon was briefly attached to the project. This brings us up to date as Carnahan stepped up to direct Drake’s silver-screen debut, which was originally scheduled to hit cinemas in June of this year.
The Uncharted movie finally seems to be gaining some traction thanks to Carnahan’s involvement, although when the film will finally see the light of day is anyone’s guess.
