Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat system is action-based, confirms director

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the combat system in the hotly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 will indeed be action-based.

Speaking in an interview with the latest Famitsu magazine (via NeoGAF), Nomura-san cleared up previous reports that erroneously suggested the title would support a command-based combat system that echoes the original 1997 version of the seminal JRPG. This ties in with what the team had said previously in regards to Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat, although non-action fans shouldn’t be concerned, apparently.

Elsewhere, Nomura confirmed to the publication that the fight against Guard Scorpion, which takes place at the end of the first raid on the Mako reactor at the start of the game, will feature new attacks and feature destructible scenery. Cloud can also interact seamlessly with his environment, with one screenshot depicting the spiky-haired protagonist taking cover. 

Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date

Square Enix originally announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference, and later that year confirmed the game would be split into multiple parts in order to do justice to the original storyline. However, a release date has yet to be confirmed, and from recent comments it sounds like the game still may be some way off despite the original celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Nonetheless, with news that the main voice recording has wrapped up, there’s still hope that we may see the first part of the game out before the end of the year. Something we can probably rule out, however, is high-definition remakes of other Final Fantasy 7-related titles such as Crisis Core and Before Crisis.
