PS Vita 2 release championed by Nier developer

Nier Automata director Yoko Taro has said that he’s keen to see a PS Vita 2 release, arguing that while Nintendo’s Switch is a fine piece of hardware, it’s a little on the large side.

Writing on Twitter, the developer revealed that the Switch’s release has made him more keen than ever to see a successor to the PS Vita hit stores, and that it would be ideal if the device would be smaller than Nintendo’s latest console, similar to how the original PlayStation Vita was. Taro-san also said that smartphone gaming doesn’t give him the same satisfaction that a dedicated gaming handheld would do.

Sony has yet to announce a PS Vita 2, although the format holder has previously commented that the climate is not right for a new handheld. Nonetheless, this hasn’t stopped a patent filing  from appearing on the web, which reportedly showcase early concepts for a PS Vita 2. Interestingly, the design appears to take a leaf out of the Switch’s book, although from what we can tell there isn’t an option to dock it and connect the device to your TV.

The original PS Vita was released in Japan back in December 2011 and saw its western release drop the following spring. Despite a solid first-party lineup during its first 18 months or so, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Killzone: Mercenary, Tearaway, and Resistance: Burning Skies, the system failed to capture the success of the PlayStation Portable, although it has in recent years enjoyed success as a companion device for the PS4, thanks to Remote Play and indie support.
