Call of Duty World War 2 release has been teased for a while

Reports broke over the weekend that Activision is taking its Call of Duty 2017 back to its roots on the World War II battlefields for its latest outing this year, but it would appear developer Sledgehammer Games has been teasing the game for a while now.

Specifically, Michael Condrey, who serves as co-founder and studio head at Sledgehammer Games, posted on his Twitter account back in April 2016 that he was working on a mysterious new Call of Duty title, labelled simple as ‘COD ####’ alongside the existing Advanced Warfare and Modern Warfare 3. The listing was removed in just a few days, although it’s not hard to imagine that this refers to Call of Duty World War II.

In addition to that, it’s worth remembering that a number of WWII-era weapons were found within supply drops in Advanced Warfare, including the MP40, M1 Garand, and M1911, potentially teasing the direction of 2017’s entry in the long-running first-person shooter series.

There’s not much to go on right now concerning the Call of Duty World War 2 release, with initial reports leaking some promotional materials and artwork. However, given the success of Battlefield 1’s World War 1 excursion, it wouldn’t be surprising if Activision did decide to take its own franchise back to its roots after a lengthy tour of contemporary and futuristic battlefields over the past few years.

Call of Duty currently operates on a three-year development cycle split between Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games. Last year’s offering, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, was produced by IW, with Treyarch churning out 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Sledgehammer working on 2014’s Advanced Warfare.
