Sledgehammer Games’ Michael Condrey has offered some more insight into the Call of Duty: WW2 War Mode, which looks set to offer a series of set piece-style events echoing major battles from the Second World War.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Condrey described the Call of Duty WW2 multiplayer feature as an “asymmetrical, narrative led” mode which showcases the push-and-pull nature of conflicts between the Allies and the Axis during the latter years of the war, as U.S. and European forces attempted to push back the Nazis throughout occupied Europe.

“So the collision of Axis versus Allies over strategic objectives, right?” he said. “Which if you think about it largely describes what World War 2 was – it was about taking ground, and attacking and defending, right? This is all just illustrative, but for the Allies maybe it’s ‘push through the hedgerows, take the hill – destroy the radio tower and then take out the 88s?’
“From the German perspective,” added Condrey, “it would be ‘hold the line at the hedgerows, if you lose the line pull back to the barn, and if you lose the barn, pull back to the radio tower – if you lose the radio tower, defend the 88s’ right? And so you have this push-pull of these real true collisions of Axis versus Allies and it’s really powerful.”
Finally, when quizzed if these events would offer a connected story, Condrey replied that they would instead offer “a series of these objective-driven conflicts.”
The Call of Duty WW2 release date on PS4, PC, and Xbox One is set for November 3, 2017. The game is the first entry in the multi-million selling franchise to take place during World War II since 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, and marks the first time since the original game not to feature health regeneration. Call of Duty WW2 is set within the 1944-1945 era of the conflict and takes gamers to battlefields across France, Belgium and Germany, with the action mainly focusing on two soldiers in the 1st Infantry Division.
