Just a few days ago, we reported that Studio Wildcard (ARK: Survival Evolved) has said that they have cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One working internally and that Sony is the one blocking it from becoming a reality. While that might be the case, Microsoft’s Xbox division is really adamant to make it happen.
At the on-going gamescom event in Germany, Xbox marketing head Aaaron Greenberg admitted that they’re talking to Sony about it.
Absolutely, yeah. We’re talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we’re talking to them and we’re hopeful that they’ll be supportive of it.
Of course, Sony and Microsoft talking is stll no guarantee that things will work out. If you’re Sony and you have the lion’s share of console sales this generation, would you want non-console owners to buy a PS4 to play with their friends, or give them a choice of getting an Xbox One or PS4 to be able to play with their friends? From a business standpoint, it’s easy to see why Sony is so reluctant to do this, but for the sake of gamers everywhere, let’s hope Sony agrees.
Which game would you want to have PS4 and Xbox One cross-play if you had the chance?
