Sony has confirmed during its latest financial briefing that PlayStation 4 shipments have reached 67.5 million worldwide as of September 30, 2017.
PS4 shipments continue Sony’s huge success in console war
The hardware manufacturer previously confirmed back in August that its flagship console had moved 63.3 million units as of June 30.
PS4 shipped 4.2 million during the latest financial quarter, up from 3.9 million the same period last year.
The figure also represents the highest quarterly shipments for the console since last year’s holiday season, where Sony moved an impressive 9.7 million units.
Sony is now forecasting 19 million PS4 shipments by the conclusion of its financial year ended March 31, 2018. This is up from the previous prediction of 18 million though down on the 20 million it shipped during the previous financial year.
The umbrella that houses the PlayStation business, Game & Network Services division, saw year-on-year sales rise by 35.4 percent to 433.2 billion yen. Sony pointed to an increase in PS4 game and hardware sales as the primary factor in the division’s rise in fortunes.
"This significant increase was primarily due to the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses. During the current quarter, there was a ¥3.1 billion positive impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations," said Sony.
The PS4 was released in November 2013, going head-to-head with Microsoft’s Xbox One. Sony later complemented its new hardware with the release of PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, and PSVR.
While it isn’t known exactly how well the PS4 is performing in comparison to the Xbox One—Microsoft has been notoriously quiet on sales figures in recent years—Sony has said that its current generation system is outselling its rival by three-to-one in Europe.
