Multiversus is having its full launch on May 28th, 2024 on PS4 and PS5. With this being a free-to-play fighting platformer it has the potential to be one of the hidden success stories this year. The game was originally launched as an open beta in July 2022. Then the beta went offline on June 25, 2023, and the full launch is now happening on May 28, 2024. During the beta phase the game already garnered over 20 million players along with very positive reviews. On Steam it broke records for the biggest launch of a fighting game on the platform. We’re exploring what people like about it and why it’s worth a look. The next months don’t have many releases on the horizon for PS5, Multiversus stands out as one of the major releases in May and fits in perfectly to fill players’ summer gap.
1. Free to Play
Easily the game’s biggest “selling” point: It’s free to play. You don’t have to spend money to get started. In-game purchases are optional. This makes it very accessible and a perfect party game. Your friends won’t need to spend money to join you. You just need to download Multiversus from the PlayStation Store.
Even the Normal tier of the Season Pass is free and you can earn the free in-game currency “Gold” to unlock new characters and cosmetics. The game makes money off its premium currency called “Gleamium” which is needed to buy the Premium Season Pass, cosmetics items, and lets you unlock Characters quicker than with regular in-game gold.
2. Easy to Pick up and play with Friends
The game is easy to learn. So if you are looking for something quick to play with a group of friends this is a good fit. There is 1v1, 2v2, and 4-player free-for all. There is both local co-op play and online co-op play. So whether you want to do couch co-op with 3 friends or get together online, this game makes it easy to play together.
3. Legendary Characters
From Bugs Bunny to Batman and even Rick and Morty, the game features a wide selection of fun characters you will already know from movies, shows, and comic books. At the time of writing there are 23 confirmed playable characters, you can find them on the official Multiversus Roster, which is regularly being expanded with more characters. As new characters get added it provides a reason to get back into the game and try out their new moves. The game will keep evolving like that and the Season Passes help bring players back.
4. The game is already well established
Due to the game having been in beta for a year, the developers had plenty of time to make improvements and balance the fighters. This should make for a smooth launch on PS5. With how buggy most freshly released games are nowadays it might be for the best that this one already had a whole year out in the wild. With how popular the beta was there should be a significant influx of players at the full release.
5. Crossplay & Cross-progression
The PS5 version will support crossplay with other platforms. That means if someone in your friend group doesn’t have a PS5 they can still join through the free PC Steam or Xbox One / Series S/X versions. This makes it easy to stay connected.
