With Mortal Kombat X releasing less than a month from now, Ed Boon and the team over at NetherRealm Studios have revealed plenty of news regarding the game’s new modes, as well as which characters have made and didn’t make the final cut.
The Mortal Kombat series is notorious for its over the top gore and elaborate fighters, and throughout the franchise’s history we have seen numerous fighters come and go. Some have been welcome additions to the MK lore and others should have stayed on the drawing board.
Here’s a list of some fighters that we can almost guarantee won’t be making an appearance in Mortal Kombat X.
Hsu Hao
This fighter made his debut back in 2002 in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. Although he had an average backstory, being a member of the Red Dragon clan and causing havoc within Sonya and Jax’s special forces unit, it was his goofy look that could never win him a place amongst the MK favorites. His weird retro police officer looking cap made him look like a steroid juiced member of the Village People. He is remembered as one of the worst designed fighters throughout Mortal Kombat’s history.
Moloch
Also making his debut in 2002’s Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Moloch is a member of the Oni. A menacing primitive race hailing from the NetherRealm. Moloch served as a sub-boss for MK Deadly Alliance. He will most definitely not be seen in the game as we have witnessed Quan Chi carrying his severed head during his pre-fight intro….poor Moloch.
Kobra
First making an appearance in Mortal Kombat Deception, he looked like a hybrid of Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter…sounds cool right? Wrong…his completely generic design made him instantly forgettable.

Sheeva
Originally seen back in Mortal Kombat 3, Sheeva became a fan favorite for being the first female representing her Shokan race. Her familiar move set combined with four arms, made her a force to be reckoned with. Due to having another more popular member of the Shokan race being represented in MKX, Goro…there’s a slim chance we will see her return in this installment but hey, you never know.
Motaro
Serving as a sub-boss back in Mortal Kombat 3, Motaro was a unique character due to him being the first and only centaur appearing in a Mortal Kombat title and for also being the first MK character on four legs. His Godzilla esque battle cries and signature tail whip move will always hold a special place in MK fans hearts but due to having four legs, his limited mobility and sheer size would seem out of place in a face paced combo driven match…so for these reasons, I think he’s a no go.
Nitara
It’s too bad that this vampire character never really became popular amongst MK fans. It would be cool to have a blood sucker frequent the franchise but unfortunately her large bat like wings and gothic design seemed a little too gimmicky even throughout the Twilight era where vampires were all the rage. RIP Nitara although, I don’t think you are missed.
Freddy Krueger
One of our favourite horror icons appeared in 2011’s Mortal Kombat and seemed to fit in quite well. With recent news that Jason Vorhees will now be making his debut in Mortal Kombat X, it is highly unlikely that Freddy will be returning as well. If you are like me, I would love the opportunity to pit Freddy against Jason in an epic mash up but I guess that’s just wishful thinking.
With the final roster close to a full reveal, Mortal Kombat fans are eagerly anticipating playing as their favourite characters as well as mastering new ones.
NetherRealm has seemed to really work off the momentum of their two recent hits; 2011’s Mortal Kombat and Injustice Gods Among Us. If all goes well, we can surely bet that this long lasting franchise will continue to create memorable characters and maybe even some not so memorable ones. Either way, more MK is always a great thing.
