Activision Says Call Of Duty Dev Structure Won’t Change Under Microsoft Ownership

Activision‘s senior Vice President and general manager of Call of Duty, Max Cox, has revealed during an interview with the Washington Post that the development structure for the multi-million selling franchise won’t change under its new ownership at Microsoft.

The Call of Duty franchise rotates between numerous developers in order to maintain the annual release schedule for the franchise, with some titles taking three years to produce. For example, in the past it may have switched between Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch, each one getting enough time to work on their own individual titles while having a new Call of Duty game out each holiday season.

Activision had confirmed back in 2021 that all of its major studios are working on Call of Duty, and even though Microsoft has now acquired the publishing giant, this structure is not going to change,

When you look at Treyarch and Raven, they have a history of working together within the Black Ops franchise going all the way back to 2010. You have this history with people you work with, and that ultimately shows when it comes to the finished product from a publishing and go-to-market standpoint.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is the latest entry in the series, which came out last week across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox formats. Microsoft revealed during its latest earnings call overnight that the game has been a major success so far, becoming the ‘biggest Call of Duty release ever.’
