Activision shows strong Q2 earnings, PS3 held strong

Activision Blizzard’s quarterly earnings report today exceeded expectations with the company bringing in $1.038 billion USD, originally predicted at $1 billion. The success is due, in part, to Prototype, Transformers, X-Men Origins, Call of Duty, and Guitar Hero.

When you add in World of Warcraft, the company is one of the most profitable game companies. Its MMO market brought in $324 million. As for consoles, the Xbox 360 brought in $231 million, and the PlayStation 3 brought in $152 million. The PlayStation 2 still remains relatively strong with some $44 million in Q2. The PSP brought in $17 million.

Also during Activision’s investor call today, the company announced that we’ll see more games featuring James Bond, Tony Hawk, and Spider-Man, along with games based on the theatrical release of Shrek 4, and How to Train Your Dragon. In addition, we’ll see a new “innovative property in the $4 billion action genre.”
