Among Us just got what is arguably its biggest update yet with the Cosmicube Update, that adds new roles to the game, a new in-game store, the ability to link your account across platforms, and it’s available right now.
The news was announced in an Emergency Meeting livestream from Innersloth, which featured an animated presentation that also included gameplay from the new update. You can check out the full video for yourself, right here:
An in-game store is not entirely a surprising addition to the game, as your avatar in Among Us is rife with opportunity to dress up and stylize. You also get brand new cosmetic options with this update like being able to put visors on your little bean crewmates.
Speaking of beans, that’s one of the new in-game currencies. Beans are earned through regular online gameplay and can be used to redeem some cosmicubes and cosmetics in the store. The premium currency are Stars, which can be purchased with real-world money. Stars can be used to purchase in-store special items, and cosimcubes.
Pods are the final type of currency, and you can gather a pod “If and only if you have a cosmicube activated”, says developer Innersloth on their website. Cool as these cosmetics are to see come into the game, Innersloth is very blunt that the in game store is there just to make money, but they are also very transparent in that it is only for cosmetics which have no gameplay effect, and the money will be used for development costs.
Roles on the other hand do have a massive effect on gameplay. There are three new crewmate roles, Scientist, Engineer and Guardian Angel, along with one new imposter role – Shapeshifter.
Starting with the Shapeshifter, it seems that Among Us has come full circle in playing off one of the game’s inspirations, John Carpenter’s The Thing. This new role can turn into players they’ve just killed, though the process does involve an animation that takes a few seconds to complete, so you won’t be able to pull it off instantaneously.
The Scientist has a device which allows them to see each player’s vital signs at all times. So if someone dies, the Scientist will likely be the first to know about it – though you’ll need to keep your device charged by completing tasks. The Engineer is simply a crewmate that can travel through the vents, and the Guardian Angel is a fallen crewmate, who as a ghost can protect remaining crewmates with a shield.
Just like every other role, you can adjust settings as to how many you would like, the advantages or disadvantages they have, and their individual abilities.
Another long awaited feature being added in this update are achievements, which is great news for trophy hunters who will likely have a fair list of trophies to get through for yet another platinum.
With Among Us coming to PS5 and PS4 and this new update just releasing now, it will be a great time for any newcomers to Among Us to jump in, and for veterans it’ll be easy to now to link your account between your already existing platforms.
What’s more however, is that Innersloth teases at the end of the blog post about this update that there is more to come, even between now and the upcoming PlayStation release.
