British actor Andy Serkis has argued that more effort should be spent investing in videogame narrative.
Serkis, who is perhaps most famous for his portrayal of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, suggested “there’s no heart” in today’s market of software, with little effort put into crafting a solid narrative compared to that of film and plays.
Speaking with Babble, he stated, “Games — there’s no heart in them.”
“They’re not about anything that is lasting. We put so much into the writing of film scripts and plays, but not into games."
"And games are where the audience is going to be. In the next generation of kids, you’re going to see a lot of storytelling in games. And I think it’s important to invest in that. I absolutely think that gaming is a massive storytelling arena in the making and now the technology has arrived to do that. It’s a fascinating time.”
Serkis is no stranger to the videogame world, having worked on the PlayStation 3 exclusive slash ‘em up, Heavenly Sword, where he provided the voice of King Bohan in addition to acting as dramatic director.
