Who remembers Spike, the time-travelling monkey from the PlayStation One era that had to rescue his primate buddies and re-write history?
Ape Escape was a stunning platform game that was riddled with humor and clever references to pop culture. It also became the first game to make use of the Dual Analog controller for gameplay.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s hit series was a massive critical success, and now it appears that we’re about to get another dose of monkey shenanigans on PlayStation 4, with the arrival of the PS2 classic, Ape Escape 2.
Indeed, the Pan European Board has just rated the second entry in the platforming series, stating.
– The content of this game is suitable for persons aged 7 years and over only.
– It contains: Non realistic looking violence towards fantasy characters – Violence that is set in a cartoon, slapstick or child like setting that could be upsetting to very young children.
It also lists a release date as September 14, which is today!
While we’ve had no word on whether Ape Escape 2 will hit the PlayStation Store for PS4 this week, we wouldn’t rule out it making an appearance later in the week in the North America and European updates on Tuesday as part of the PlayStation Classics range. What’s interesting about its possible arrival is that PS2 games have not been available to play on PS4 so far, though PS2 Classics have been available on PS3.
Interestingly, Twisted Metal: Black and Dark Cloud 2 are also listed by the Pan European Board by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, suggesting that we could be about to see an influx of PS2 Classics hit Sony’s latest console, perhaps via the PlayStation Now subscription service rather than being directly available from the store.
In Ape Escape 2, players took control of Jimmy and used gadgets such as the electro magnet, water cannon and Bananrang in an attempt to capture over 300 monkeys in a range of inventive ways, also trying to solve environment-based puzzles along the way. Though Ape Escape 2 wasn’t as well received as the original, it was still an excellent title that is well worth a look if you never got a chance to experience its unique concept.
