Assassin’s Creed III’s American Revolution backdrop isn’t the most accommodating for shining the spotlight on female assassins, Ubisoft has said.
Speaking to Kotaku, creative director Alex Hutchinson observed that the Revolution and the stories surrounding it are very much dominated by males.
"It’s always up in the air. I think lots of people want it," he explained. "In this period it’s been a bit of a pain. The history of the American Revolution is the history of men.”
"There are a few people, like John Adams’ wife. They tried very hard in the TV series to not make it look like a bunch of dudes, but it really is a bunch of dudes."
Hutchinson said that adding a female assassin into the mix would ultimately make the action less believable.
"It felt like, if you had all these men in every scene and you’re secretly, stealthily in crowds of dudes [as a female assassin], it starts to feel kind of wrong. People would stop believing it,” he said.
Assassin’s Creed III is scheduled to ship for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the U.S. on October 30, with a European release due on October 31.
