Assassin’s Creed Valhalla developer Ubisoft has moved to apologise for a character description in the game, which was criticised by Can I Play That Editor Courtney Craven for discriminating against people with disabilities.
The text in question refers to a burn victim who is “terrified someone will see her disfigured face.” Craven’s complaint has prompted Ubisoft to remove the text in a future update for the game.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla To Remove Character Text Following Criticism
Craven posted the following to Twitter:
I didn’t include this in my #AssassinsCreedValhalla impressions piece but it’s equally important to address. This is a character description in the game. It’s absolutely unacceptable to talk about facial differences this way. Writers for games and otherwise need to do better.
In response, Ubisoft pledged to remove the text in a future update for the game, which launched yesterday.
Thank you so much for pointing this out – we apologize for unintentionally reinforcing ableism through this language. We will remove this language in an upcoming update.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out now for PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, with a PS5 version arriving tomorrow. You can read our verdict on the PS4 version of the game here.
