Battlefield 3 has ‘no prayer’ in beating Call of Duty, says analyst

DICE’s Battlefield 3 doesn’t have a hope in hell of trumping this year’s entry in the Call of Duty franchise, says industry analyst Michael Pachter.

The outspoken Wedbush Morgan chap said that although he sees the scrumptious-looking shooter pulling in 25-35% more sales than its predecessor, it has “no prayer” in beating whatever Activision has up its sleeves for 2011’s Call of Duty outing.

“EA is trying to gain share incrementally, and I’m sure that if it is a great game, Battlefield 3 will sell 25 – 35% more copies than the last version. It would have to sell around 300% more than the last version to topple Call of Duty,” said Pachter, during an interview with IndustryGamers.

“The question you didn’t ask is whether Battlefield 3 will take share; based upon the growing installed base of CoD multiplayer players, it’s possible that BOTH games will see higher sales in 2011, so I wonder whether EA will actually ‘take’ share,” he continued.

While Battlefield 3 got a meaty reveal at GDC earlier this month, Activision’s yet to lift the curtains on its latest Call of Duty title, which will presumably hit stores in November.

Sledgehammer Games is supposedly working on the shooter – rumored to be none other than Modern Warfare 3 – alongside Infinity Ward and Raven Games.
