Electronic Arts’ Chief Financial Officer has confirmed that the Battlefield franchise won’t return for a couple more years, with next year instead playing host to Star Wars Battlefront 2.
New Battlefield won’t be here for a while yet
Speaking at the Nasdaq 35th Investor Program, Blake Jorgensen revealed that the publishing giant “won’t have another Battlefield back for a couple of years. Next year we’ll have Battlefront 2, the Star Wars game.”
The most recent entry in the military-themed first-person shooter series, Battlefield 1, launched on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One back in October 2016. Developer DICE is supporting the game with four additional expansion packs, although beyond that we don’t know what the future has in store for the franchise.
Battlefield 1 was a significant turning point for the series, with the action heading back to the trenches of The Great War and eschewing the contemporary war zones of recent entries, such as Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline. The game was a massive success, receiving rave scores from critics and performing solidly at retail.
As for Star Wars Battlefront, it is likely that DICE will incorporate a lot of fan feedback into next year’s sequel, as critics and gamers alike voiced the dissatisfaction with the original game, notably the lack of a proper single-player component among other features.
