Capcom’s Hideki Kamiya has revealed in a blog post that he’s making a concerted effort to be as open as possible regarding his forthcoming action title, Bayonetta, in an effort to ensure punters know exactly what they’re letting themselves in for.
Writing in a post on the Bayo Blog, Kamiya stated, "With Bayonetta, we would hate for someone to think it is a heartwarming tale and then buy the game to discover it is really a sadistically hard game (I hope…)”
He also went on to discuss the issues in producing a female protagonist and having players relate to such a character in a game filled with ‘hardcore battle action,’ before detailing some of his earlier creations, such as Resident Evil 2’s Leon S. Kennedy and Devil May Cry’s Dante.
“When the team looked at the design doc, there were apparently a few people who were uncomfortable with the choice. “It will be hard to relate to her,” they said. “It will be a hard sell.” There were plenty of reasons to feel that way, and perhaps it really is hard to connect a female character with hardcore battle action. But to me, that gap was the attraction,” he said.
“The first male character I created was Leon in Resident Evil 2. In Resident Evil 1, the main character, Chris, was a bit of a blunt, tough-guy type. So in RE2, I wanted to change it up and make Leon someone with weaknesses, but ultimately a man who was on the ball.”
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, Bayonetta casts you in the shoes of a gun-wielding witch tasked with gory mission of blasting through legions of creatures masquerading as angels. According to Kamiya, the game looks set to “blow the doors off the action genre.”
