Best Indie Game of 2013

2013 has just about wrapped, and it’s that time of year again when the staff and community at PSU.com cast a reflective glance back at the last 12 months of gaming goodness. Yep, it’s our annual Game of the Year awards, where we scrutinize titles across a broad range of genres in order to determine the cream of the crop of titles from 2013. Whether it’s RPGs, action/adventure, racing, beat-’em-up or the coveted Game of the Year award itself, you have been voting in your dozens over the past week or so, and the results are now in.

So, let’s crack on with the awards. This time, we take a look at Best Indie Game.

Indie titles have truly come into their own in the past year or so, and is one particular avenue that Sony has been quick to embrace with the PS4. Of course, multiple Indie titles have graced the PS3 and PS Vita in the last 12 months, from the stripped-back Thomas Was Alone to the gore fest, action-centric Hotline Miami. Indeed, these gems are testament to the fact a video game doesn’t have to be equipped with big-budget effects and sumptuous set pieces to provide a compelling experience for the user.

And the winner is…

Resogun & Thomas Was Alone

In a first for PSU, we have a tie. It seems you folks were equally impressed by PS4 launch effort Resogun and PSN’s Thomas Was Alone. Resogun’s appeal lies in its vibrant visuals and fast-paced gameplay, offering a skill-base shoot-’em-up that excels in both single-player and multiplayer battles.

Meanwhile, Thomas Was Alone is unique in that it employs a simple aesthetic reminiscent of retro games of the 1980s, though don’t let this fool you — Mike Bithell’s puzzle-platform title is just as engaging as any modern game. Featuring a great score, Thomas Was Alone packs a great set of puzzles to tackle and a surprisingly compelling storyline as you guide the lonely AI through a series of increasingly complex levels.
