Speaking during an interview with The Direct, Francis Lawrence, director of the upcoming BioShock movie, has reiterated that the project is still very much alive, although admitted that it’s world and narrative are a “tough nut to crack.”
“I hope so. You know, it’s tricky on a couple fronts,” he commented. “I’m definitely active in it. We are still working on it. It is a tough nut to crack that world and that story, especially because you are the character when you play the game, and so creating that character from scratch into that world that quite honestly, is pretty batshit in a most amazing way. It’s tricky. So we’re getting there, and we’re getting close, which is great.”
Lawrence noted that the situation at Netflix could make things difficulty, referring to news that the streaming giant had fired Dan Lin and Bela Bajaria, who served as head of film and chief content officer, respectively.
“I would love nothing more than to be able to make that movie. So still working on it,” Lawrence said. “And then, you have also just the Netflix of it all because Netflix right now has had regime changes and just all of that kind of nonsense that I don’t like to have to deal with or have to. So we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll figure it out.“
The BioShock movie is being produced by Roy Lee, who revealed back in February this year he was hoping Lawrence would pick the film back up after he was finished with the Hunger Games prequel. He also claimed that Netflix and Take-Two are eager to get the movie out around the same time as the new BioShock game.
There had been plans to adapt BioShock years ago and the project was meant to be helmed by Gore Verbinski, who revealed back in 2017 that the movie was scrapped just eight weeks before filming was set to kick off.
