A new entry in the classic sci-fi shooter series Marathon is officially in production at Bungie for PC and PS5, the company announced today during the PlayStation Showcase.
That’s not all, either. Marathon will feature full Cross-Play and Cross-Save functionality between PC and PS5, and represents Bungie’s first new project in more than 10 years, as it’s been busy with Destiny and Destiny 2 all this time.
Brian Edberg, Bungie’s Editorial Lead, commented:
A sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, Marathon will find players engaging one another as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches, fame, and infamy.
Meanwhile, Christopher Barrett, Marathon’s Game Director, added:
We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world. At the same time, our vision for this game is something new. It’s not a direct sequel to the originals, but something that certainly belongs in the same universe and that feels like a Bungie game.
If you’re scratching your head wondering what Marathon is, well, long before Halo came about Bungie was best known for developing Marathon games in the 1990s — three of them, in fact. We already knew that the studio wanted to release at least one non-Destiny game by 2025, so it looks like Marathon could be the first.
Marathon is coming to PS5 and PC.
