Sledgehammer Games has hinted that its next Call of Duty title could be heading back to historical battlezones, according to a number of intriguing messages from the studio.
Call of Duty 2017 heading back to classic WWII battlefields?
For starters, studio overlord Michael Condrey’s holiday message featured an image of a M911 pistol on it, which became a popular firearm during World War I and was later used during the Second World War.
Finally, a New Year’s video posted by the studio depicts an old-school engine and lock system, which features the chimes of a clock in a similar vein to that of Big Ben. While these hints are by no means confirmation of a return to World War II (or perhaps even World War I; it worked for Battlefield 1, right?) it’s still an interesting development, especially considering the popular belief that Call of Duty has long been stagnating as a franchise during its futuristic setting.
It’s officially 2017! Some call it the zodiac year of the Hammer. Have a safe and fun New Year’s, everyone! #SHGholidays pic.twitter.com/24qlku6ITd

No details on this year’s Call of Duty have been confirmed as of yet, only that Sledgehammer Games is behind the title and has been working on it for two years now. For those who don’t know, the series rotates on a three-year development cycle between Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, and Treyarch.
Sledgehammer Games’ last entry in the franchise was 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and was followed by Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III in 2015 and last year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare by Infinity Ward.
