Raven Software’s Derek Racca has revealed that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts have benefited from a boost in performance thanks to the arrival of next-generation hardware.
Speaking with TechRadar, Racca said that the team’s scalable engine has facilitated a boost in performance for current-generation versions of the Activision shooter.
"Basically, our engine will scale to provide the best look for each platform," Racca explained.
"There’s no current-gen engine or next-gen engine, it’s just ‘the engine" and basically we create something, an asset that’s just ‘shoot-for-the-moon crazy high-res’, and then the engine determines the best way to show that on each generation."
Would the improvements have come about if it were not for PS4 and Xbox One? Racca believes so, but perhaps not as far as to revamp the engine.
“Sure, we would have done stuff to improve [the game], but I don’t know if we would have gone this route because of the console transition," he said.
"We may have, but we are always trying to improve how the game looks."
Call of Duty: Ghosts is due out on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U on November 5, with a PS4 version due on November 15 in the U.S. and November 29 in Europe. The Xbox One version arrives on November 22 in the west.
