Speaking with investors this week, Capcom has said it will consider developing games for Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, as well as Nintendo’s next gaming platform, the NX.
While making it clear it hasn’t got anything in the pipeline at present, Capcom made it clear that the technology is of firm interest to the Japanese software giant.
"Our R&D operations are working on technologies for many types of hardware," said the company. "We will consider the possibility of creating technology demonstrations and making versions of titles under development for these new platforms."
"At this time, we have not announced any plans for specific products or the timing of a product launch."
Capcom has already tested the waters of virtual reality gaming with the horror-focused Kitchen at E3 2015, which was met with extremely positive reactions from gamers who went hands-on with the tech demo. Just a few months ago, Capcom said that its Resident Evil division was focusing heavily on VR gaming, although it appears it isn’t quite ready to announce any new projects at the time of writing. Could Resident Evil VR be in the pipeline? We’ll have to wait and see.
Speaking of Resident Evil, the series celebrates its 20th anniversary in March 2016, having first launched in Japan for the PlayStation on March 22, 1996. Capcom will no doubt have some surprises in store for fans of the venerable franchise, although we already know they have a number of games in the pipeline, including Resident Evil Zero HD, Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps, and Resident Evil 2 Remake. Rumors of Resident Evil 7 have been doing the rounds for a while now, although Capcom has yet to officially announce the sequel—could we finally hear something next year for the series’ 20th anniversary?
PlayStation VR is due out in the first half of 2016 and will support a number of major titles, including Tekken 7, Dreams, Gran Turismo Sport, War Thunder, and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.
