Carmageddon: Max Damage tearing up the track on PS4 later this year

Carmageddon: Max Damage is heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year, Stainless Games has announced.

The latest entry in the venerable and extremely bloody combat racing series will feature over 30 different vehicles and 90 power-ups, plus 10 large-scale environments to explore as you mow down pedestrians, animals and aliens in custom killing machines.

Max Damage will feature both a career and multiplayer mode, plus an action replay function allowing gamers to relive the chaos from any perspective. However, it isn’t yet known if the multiplayer will feature online and/or local battles.

"Carmageddon: Max Damage presents more carnage and mayhem than ever before, and will be available on consoles later this year," commented Stainless Games. "Set in a world of over-the-top violence, crazy PowerUps and non-stop laughs, you play against a bunch of complete crazies in twisted automotive killing machines whose aim is purely to maim you. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps."

Inspired by the 1975 cult classic Death Race, Carmageddon was first released on the PC back in 1997, and created a heap of controversy at the time due to its excessive violence. The game was later ported to a number of other platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy Color.

Unsurprisingly, the game spawned a number of sequels, including Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now and Carmageddon TDR 2000 in 1998 and 2000, respectively. An expansion for the original game was also released in 1997.
