A sadistic robot bear named Monokuma traps the students in their high school and a student will only be allowed to leave if if he or she can kill a fellow classmate and be found not guilty in a court trial.
The first two Danganronpa games originally came out on the PlayStation Portable then were later remastered for the PlayStation Vita (these versions were the first to come to the West). PC versions of both released on Steam earlier this year.
A spin-off PS Vita game taking place between the first two titles, titled Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, released in 2014 for Japan and in 2015 North America and Europe.
A third mainline entry named New Danganronpa V3: A New Semester for Everyone’s Killing Life is in development for PS4 and PS Vita. Danganronpa VR, however, will be less of a direct sequel and star students from a different school: a prison school named Gifted Inmates Academy.
The story from the first two games concluded in the anime series Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School, which aired this past season and is available for streaming on FUNimation.
