Darkstalkers won’t be making a comeback, says Capcom

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono has revealed that the Japanese giant won’t be releasing a new entry in the Darkstalkers franchise anytime soon.

Speaking during an interview with Famitsu magazine, Ono-san, who is the driving force behind the likes of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter x Tekken, pinned the blame on poor sales of Darkstalkers Resurrection.

"We won’t be releasing a new installment in the Darkstalkers series anytime soon," said Ono-san. "As we didn’t manage to hit our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection… so…"

Just in case you missed it, Darkstalkers Resurrection was released as a downloadable bundle in 2013 featuring retro brawlers Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. The pair came with new features such as high-definition visuals and full online multiplayer.

Elsewhere, Ono-san also revealed that Capcom is unlikely to give the thumbs up to a sequel unless its predecessor managed to shift two million copies.

Capcom is rumored to be working on a sequel to Street Fighter IV, though nothing official has been announced as of yet.
