Speaking during an interview with Variety, Jim Ryan, soon-to-be departing CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has offered a few words of wisdom for his temporary successor, Hirok Tokoti, as well as reflected on the company’s successful launch of the PS5 during the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Ryan announced in September 2023 that he would be retiring from PlayStation in March 2024, having spent more than three decades with the company, rising through the ranks in the process.
Never forget that we’re an entertainment business. If we continue to entertain, delight, and surprise our community of gamers, I think Totoki-san and whoever follows him will be just fine.
It was my job to exude a sense of calm and serenity. Actually, I was there at my dining-room table, head in my hands, wondering how we were going to do this. I’m so proud of what the team achieved back in 2020.

So, what’s Ryan going to do next? While he confirmed he isn’t retiring completely, the executive remained coy about his next move, but did tease: “I’m going to take my life in a little different direction.”
