Bungie’s Luke Smith has confirmed that Destiny 2 will utilise set perk rolls for its armor and weapons.
Speaking during an E3 2017 interview, Smith, who serves as game director on the much-anticipated alien shooter, confirmed that the sequel will feature random rolls on its gear, which is something the original game employed for hungry loot hoarders. In other words, the perks that your gear comes equipped with are set in stone.
“There aren’t random rolls on weapons anymore,” commented Smith. “Better Devils is a Crucible hand cannon [in Destiny 2], and what it has on it is what it has on it. Period. “It‘s gonna give us more flexibility to do per-item tuning… [That’s] something we haven’t had before because of the way we were building the [first] game.”
Despite this, Smith said that the team is looking at ways in which to evolve gear for those who end up inevitably collecting the same piece of armor or weapon multiple times.

“How can my second, third, and tenth Better Devils hand cannon be interesting? That’s a question we should be asking and answering as quickly as we can… We have ideas. While I would like nothing more than to share those ideas with you, we’re up against [a deadline]. I don’t know if they’ll make it for our Sept. 6 [release] date. But we have some ideas that we’re pretty excited about.”
Destiny 2 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017, with a PC version following in October. The game follows the events of Rise of Iron, and sees the Tower come under a vicious attack by a Cabal unit known as the Red Legion, who quickly overpower the Guardians and pinch all their hard-earned gear and loot. Destiny 2 will see many fundamental shake-ups, including a revamped Crucible that focuses on 4v4 matches, plus a more expansive open-world ripe with new ‘Adventure’ side quests.
Those of you who want to get a taste of the action before launch should keep an eye out on this summer’s Destiny 2 beta.
