Destiny 2 Username Issue Is Being Investigated By Bungie

Bungie has revealed that it is looking into an issue with Destiny 2 that has seen a number of players have their usernames removed.

The issue came to light following the game’s most recent update, with a large number of players’ Bungie Names been lost and instead place by a generic ‘Guardian’ followed by four randomised numbers. Furthermore, an in-game message informs the player that their Bungie Name has been changed, as they are logging in for the first or opted to change it.

We are tracking an issue where a high number of account names have been changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. We are actively investigating and expect to have more information tomorrow, including details on an additional name change token for all players.

The developer later issued an update on the matter, confirming it has has made changes to the server and is continuing to look at options for those accounts that have been affected.

We have identified the issue that was forcing a high number of Bungie name changes. We have applied a server-side change to prevent the issue from impacting accounts moving forward . We are continuing to investigate options to address player accounts that were impacted. This will take some time as our path forward will be dependent on fixing the underlying issue.

Destiny 2 was released in September 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC version arriving the following month. The game has since been optimised for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and its latest expansion, The Final Shape, launched in June 2024.
