The latest State Of the Game Industry survey organised by the Game Developers Conference has revealed the twice as many developers are interested in working on the PS5 or Switch than Xbox.
More than 2,300 games industry professionals around the globe were polled by the survey, asking them to list which formats they were most interested in. Participants were able to select from as many options as possible, so no single platform was selected over another.
The PC was the most popular choice selected by respondents, with 80% of those survey selecting it as a platform they were interested in working on. Meanwhile, 40% said they were interested in developing for the PS5, while Nintendo Switch saw 39% of respondents selecting the platform. Finally, Xbox only saw 20% of people interested in developing for Microsoft’s system.
Beyond this, the survey also asked participants what the main factors were for their company in regards to selecting hardware to bring their games to, with audience reach taking the top spot at 78%. This was followed by business model success and discoverability with 44% and 43%, respectively.
It’s worth remembering that Microsoft has shifted its strategy in a major way in the past 18 months, having started bringing many of it major franchises to PS5 and Switch. Last year saw the likes of Gears of War Reloaded, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Forza Horizon 5 come to Sony’s format, for example.
