DOOM: The Dark Ages Director Explains The Lack Of A Multiplayer Mode

DOOM: The Dark Ages Game Director, Hugo Martin, has explained during an interview with GamesRadar why the upcoming gory shooter has given the boot to multiplayer.

While both DOOM and DOOM: Eternal featured multiplayer modes alongside a fairly robust campaign, Hugo Martin has explained that DOOM: The Dark Ages is a single-player affair, and that the decision not to include multiplayer was made “right from the beginning.” He explained that the team “made the decision early to just focus all of our energy on trying to make the best campaign we could.”

Martin added that “with Eternal, we wanted to put mechs in the game. There were things we wanted to do with Eternal,” adding “the scope of the project, you start spreading out resources to make a multiplayer component.” As for why a small multiplayer can’t just be added, Martin said, “it’s live service… you can’t just do a little multiplayer. You’ve gotta go — fans’ expectation is [that] you go all the way. It would definitely come at the expense of the single-player aspects.”

Martin previously revealed during an interview with PCGamer that it’s possible to finish DOOM: The Dark Ages without ever firing a gun, but be prepared for a tough challenge.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is scheduled for release on May 15, 2025 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
