Square Enix has revealed that Dragon Quest XI PS4 sales are outperforming its Nintendo 3DS counterpart.
Speaking during the Japanese publishing giant’s latest financial report, Yosuke Matsuda, Square Enix’s President and Representative Director, the critically acclaimed JRPG pulled in “a great consumer response and garnered praise for its contents.”
“We have seen stronger sales of the PlayStation 4 version than the Nintendo 3DS version, but given the installed base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the Nintendo 3DS version going forward,” he added.
Quizzed if the company can reach its target goal for Dragon Quest XI, Matsuda-san responded: “We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that will depend on how sales of the Nintendo 3DS version trend going forward.”
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age was released simultaneously for PS4 and 3DS in Japan on July 29, 2017. Square Enix is planning to launch the game for Nintendo Switch at a later date, and also confirmed that a western version is on the cards for 2018.
The game is the eleventh main instalment in the venerable JRPG franchise, which began with the eponymous 1986 outing for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
Dragon Quest remains one of the most popular gaming franchises in its native Japan, with over 64 million copies sold worldwide as of June 2014.
