E3 2012 Awards: Best Online

Dust 514 simply blew us away at E3 this year. This is the first time we’ve spent some serious time with the game and its development team. Having CCP creative director, Atli Mar, explain to us in detail about the game has hammered home just ambitious and exciting this project really is.

At its most basic, Dust 514 is a free-to-play MMO class-based shooter, but depending on what you want to get it out of it long term, really depends how far down the rabbit hole you really want to go. Dust 514 is rich in features, customisation and game modes, and includes a real-time auction house where players can trade items and air and ground battles where the survival of whole planets and the players that inhabit them are at stake.

It’s worth mentioning too that the game world is enormous, and easily the biggest online battlefield that you’ll find on a home console. That’s because Dust 514 is set in the Eve universe. In fact, it’s directly connected to Eve Online and you can team up with or fight against players in that world. This really is a massive project for developer CCP and PlayStation gamers, and the early signs are that we could well be on the brink of one of the greatest online FPS experiences of all time.
