Well, that’s all folks. E3 2016 has wrapped, bringing the curtains down on yet another game-filled extravaganza in sun-baked Los Angeles. Of course, the fun’s not over just yet; we’ve still got to slap awards on the titles that impressed us the most, which is no easy task considering the pedigree of games on offer.
This time around, we scrutinize the Role-Playing Game offering at this year’s show and pick the one that really blew us away. Can you guess which one?
Winner: Horizon Zero Dawn
Guerrilla Games is well and truly stepping out of its comfort zone with Horizon, which couldn’t be more different from the adrenaline-fueled exploits of the Killzone franchise. Set in a lush, post-apocalyptic earth inhabited by mechanical behemoths, Horizon Zero Dawn sees gamers stepping into the shoes of seasoned hunter Aloy as she traverses the landscape hunting down her robotic adversaries to salvage their vital component parts.
The game looks stunning, with the open world packing in a diverse landscape ripe for exploration. Not only that, but Horizon’s combat is a strategic haven for RPG purists who love a challenge, as you wield a vast array of weaponry to employ against your massive adversaries, each of which possess unique strengths and weaknesses that must be exploited. And the best part? Horizon does all of this without any gunplay whatsoever.
Horizon is already shaping up to be a full-on blockbuster release, with a dialogue wheel and upgrade system that is sure to keep players hooked on its lavish sandbox long after release. Horizon Zero Dawn will launch on PlayStation in February 2017.
