EA’s New Skate Will Be A Free To Play, Live Service Game Called “skate.”

The latest news regarding EA’s upcoming continuation of the Skate franchise is here, and it is definitely the biggest news since it was announced this game was happening at all.

This new title won’t be called Skate 4, but just skate., with the period. It’s a statement, because this is likely the last time we ever get a Skate game, since EA intends for the next one to last for years as a free to play, live service game.

Announced in a new video from the game’s official YouTube channel, this upcoming game will be free to play on launch, it’ll support cross-play and cross-progression across PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

And yes, there will be microtransactions, but Full Circle’s general manager Dan McCulloch wants to put players minds at ease, stating the game will not be pay to win, there won’t be any paid loot boxes, no paid gameplay advantages, and no part of the game locked behind a paywall.

Isabelle Mocquard, head of product management spoke about how while they understand the concerns players may have, they are “taking inspiration from games like Apex Legends, where spending money is totally optional, and it’s mostly about cosmetics and convenience.”

We’ll still have to see what that ends up meaning, though it is at least a good sign to start out.

When it comes to a release, McCulloch made it clear that it’ll release “when it’s ready,” indicating that it still looks like early days.
