SEGA’s classic Ecco the Dolphin franchise is making a major comeback according to A&R Atelier, with the company confirming that “several new Ecco the Dolphin products and games” are now in development.
Founded in Half Moon Bay, California, A&R Atelier features a number of veteran game designers including the original creators behind the Ecco the Dolphin series. Speaking in a press release, Ed Annunziata, the creator of the franchise, commented: “It has been years in the making and we’re honored to bring Ecco back. Ecco has always been more than a game about a dolphin—he’s a bridge between worlds.”
The news follows an announcement from Annunziata in May 2025, where he confirmed that Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time were set to be remastered, and comes after Sega trademarked Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco back in December 2024.
The original Ecco the Dolphin was released in 1992 for the Mega Drive/Genesis and was later ported to the Sega CD, Master System, and Game Gear. The followup, Ecco: The Ties of Time, arrived two years later, and the series last saw a major entry in 2000 with the Dreamcast title Ecco The Dolphin: Defender of the Future.
