Arjan Brussee, the co-founder of Guerrilla Games and veteran of Epic Games, has revealed that he’s working on a new game engine that is positioned as a ‘European alternative’ to the likes of Unreal and Unity.
Speaking with Dutch podcast De Technoloog, Brussee named the project as ‘The Immense Engine,’ and commented:
“No one is currently making an engine that is fully European-hosted, built by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines. Creating usable 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important, certainly for purposes other than just gaming.” He added that current engines including Unreal were “made for and by people who have to click through a menu with a mouse. If you want to change something, it has to be done for the entire engine.”
The rise of AI means that we need to approach the development of this kind of crucial software differently. As an old hand with a vision of how things should work, I see opportunities there. If you are smart and know how to put a good framework of AI agents to work, you can do the work of ten or fifteen people.
Brussee was the main coder for the first two Jazz Jackrabbit games, before co-founder Guerrilla Games and working as a development director on the Killzone franchise. He then left the studio in February 2012 to work as executive producer for Battlefield Hardline at Visceral Games, before co-founding Boss Key Productions with Cliff Bleszinski two years later. December 2017 saw him return to Epic Games until April this year, and now works as a freelance developer.
