Update: Ubisoft has just revealed no fewer than four Far Cry 5 teaser trailers, which suggest that information below is true!
Original: Following the Far Cry 5 release announcement last week, fresh rumors have emerged about the game’s storyline.
Contrary to the previous rumors about a Wild West setting, the latest information points to Far Cry 5 being set in the modern day.
A redditor claims that he was part of a focus testing group for Ubisoft’s new game about a year ago. He writes:
“The general thrust of this game is that it will take place in present day, and feature the protagonist taking on a Jim Jones or David Koresh-like religious cult in a small town in Montana that’s been populated by, essentially, Doomsday-preppers bent on furthering their cause. So, modern-day weaponry and modern-day vehicles, plus a hilly, mountainous backdrop.”
He claims to have watched a promotional video in which a character enters a church where the congregation are worshipping an evil leader who has a bible one hand an assault rifle in the other. This is said to be the game’s main antagonist.
What’s really interesting is that he believes, though he has no direct proof, that the “religion shares some commonalities with Scientology”, with one of the main characters, who stands side-by-side with the main anatagonist also sharing similaries to Scientology member, Tom Cruise – “an A-list celebrity who became a ranking member of the high council.”
It gets even more crazy with the claim that the Tom Cruise character became famous through his work in the porn scene!
It all sounds a little over-the-top, but who knows?
We should hear more directly from Ubisoft on Far Cry at E3 2017 during its press conference, which takes place on Monday, June 12 at 1 PM PT.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft is also working on a new Assassin’s Creed game. Assassin’s Creed Origins is due for release before March 2018, and the latest gameplay leak suggests that they’ll be a new scouting mechanic where players can control a bird called Akhom.
