A recent data leak from Steam has revealed that a video game adaptation of Scream was in development at Fatshark, the studio responsible for Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
X user roly poly reaper revealed that they were rummaging through the leaked files only to discover evidence of a scrapped multiplayer Scream game, and were able to record gameplay from a build they managed to get running. The premise is similar to the Friday the 13th game, where one player takes control of the killer — in this case, Ghostface — and others playing as survivors trying to escape the masked killer.
According to the X user, six builds of the Scream game were discovered in the data leak and it is speculated that the game was only made as a means of pitching to get the license to the franchise. The date of the final build is February 2011, which is two months before the release of Scream 4.
While a Scream video game never did see the light of day, Ghostface would appear in a couple of notable titles including Mortal Kombat 1 and Dead by Daylight. The series has recently enjoyed a resurgence with the release of 2022’s Scream, and was followed by Scream VI and Scream VII in 2023 and 2026, respectively.
