For over 15 years, EA Sports has released annual iterations of its most popular sports series.
However, in an interview with Bloomberg, EA CEO Andrew Wilson has said that the company is considering ditching yearly releases.
Referring specifically to the FIFA and Madden series and online updates, Wilson says that he views these games as a “365-day, live service.” “There’s a world where it gets easier and easier to move that code around — where we may not have to do an annual release,” he told host Emily Chang.
It seems that EA is in the preliminarily stages of discussion on how to proceed with its two major sports franchise, and whether to plough ahead with plans to simply update FIFA and Madden in future iterations. Whether the outcome will affect the release of FIFA 19 and Madden 19 remains to be seen.
Are you going to be happy paying a subscription fee to keep your FIFA and Madden games relevant? Or would you continue to like to see full retail releases?
