Final Fantasy 7 remake of spin-offs on PS4 unlikely, says Square Enix

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has poured cold water on any hopes of seeing high-definition remakes of Final Fantasy 7’s expanded universe titles.

The critically acclaimed 1997 RPG has received numerous spin-off titles that have expanded the narrative of the fan-favorite title, including Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 on PSP, Dirge of Cerberus for PS2, and the mobile offering Before Crisis: Final Fantasy 7. Collectively, these titles and related media are known as Compilation of Final Fantasy 7.

However, while a HD collection of these games would seem like a no-brain in light of the Final Fantasy 7 remake on PS4, Nomura-san has said that it’s unlikely to happen.

Concerning Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is a title loaded with a lot of mystery for now,  it will be different from the original Final Fantasy 7. If we make a compilation, these games will hardly have an overall coherence. It will be difficult because there is no more continuity between the Compilation and the Remake for the moment,” Nomura told Finaland.

Crisis Core was originally released on the PSP back in 2008 and is a prequel that features SOLDIER member Zack, who was the first wielder of Cloud’s iconic Buster Sword. Dirge of Cerberus starred Vincent Valentine and takes place three years after the events of FF7, while Before Crisis focuses on the adventures of the Turks in events that transpire six years prior to the 1997 classic.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently in production for PS4 and has been confirmed to be a multi-part series. Right now, it’s unknown what the game will hit stores, although Square Enix has indicated the title won’t be released for a while yet. Despite this, full voice recording has recently wrapped, so there’s still hope that we may see the game sooner rather than later. The game will employ a more action-based combat system and will also feature new areas of Midgar not featured in the original game.
