Nia DaCosta, the director behind The Marvels, has revealed that she took inspiration for the movie from Square Enix’s CG film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
Speaking with IGN, DaCosta revealed that she is quite the fan of Advent Children, which takes place following the events of 1997’s Final Fantasy VII and brings back its iconic villain, Sephiroth. Elsewhere, she also revealed that a number of video games inspired The Marvel’s, and name-dropped the likes of The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn.
It’s just an amazing, amazing movie, and has really great fight scenes and has a really great ending sequence with the main character being thrown into the sky by all the other characters.
Like, think about The Last of Us cutscenes, or Horizon Zero Dawn cutscenes, but it’s a very different style. So, for me, it was from the best kinds of games, the best sort of stories that you get, that sort of inspires me to play and I think inspires people to watch movies like this.
Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Advent Children in 2005 for DVD and later re-released the film for Blu-ray and 4K. Many of the classic characters from the game make a return, although some are regulated to cameos rather than main roles. Instead, the movie introduces a trio of newcomers that are basically the living embodiment of Sephiroth’s spirit, forcing Cloud to confront his nemesis one more.
