The Game Awards 2024 reveal of The Witcher IV got Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi more than a little excited, so much so that he nearly stood up when Ciri removed her hood.
That’s according to a Reddit AMA with the FFVII Rebirth team leads, which includes Hamaguchi-san and Yoshinori Kitase, with the latter commenting that the pair were in the crowd at TGAs: “Hamaguchi was so excited when Ciri removed her hood, he almost stood up!,” said Kitase-san.

Hamaguchi hasn’t been shy in the past in revealing his passion for The Witcher series, going so far as to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is his favourite video game of all time. As such, it’s hardly surprising to see him nearly leap out of his seat during The Witcher IV reveal; I think a lot of people were probably considering the same thing!
The Witcher IV is currently in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Developer CD Projekt RED discussed the decision to pick Ciri as the game’s lead protagonist, describing it as ‘the super right choice‘ for the title. Speaking of Ciri, the studio also confirmed speculation that the role has been recast, with Ciara Berkeley now voicing the character.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming to the PC in January 2025.
