Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Will Feature Sephiroth As A Playable Character

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Creative Director, Tetsuya Nomura, has confirmed that the upcoming PS5 RPG will feature Sephiroth as a playable character.

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, Nomura-san confirmed that the iconic villain will fall under your control at some point in the game, and made it obvious at which point this will be for those who have played the original 1997 version.

If you played the original Final Fantasy 7, I’m sure you can guess which scene I’m talking about. You will be able to control Sephiroth in the same scene in this title as you did in the original.

For the record, the sequence Nomura is referring to is the flashback to Nibelheim, Cloud’s hometown, which saw players exploring the town and embarking on a mission with Sephiroth to fix a broken Mako reactor. In the 1997 version, Sephiroth was in your party but he was controlled by the AI; that looks set to change in FFVII Rebirth, however.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is due out on February 29, 2024 for PS5. Square Enix recently confirmed that the game will take players up until the Forgotten Capital, although the order in which players will visit areas in the open world will differ compared to the original game.
